It was almost like someone had taken over my body. I was doing and saying things I normally wouldn’t have, and it just kept happening over and over. Sure sometimes I was myself, like in the car. But sex with Wyatt and agreeing to a relationship of some sort? Was I crazy? I wished he was a warlock with the black magic capable of messing with a Pteron’s mind. At least then I’d have an excuse for my behavior. But he had no magic, and I had no one to blame but myself. I’d gone crazy. That was the only way to describe it.

I normally couldn’t stand when someone else drove my car. I worried they’d crash it or do something else to one of my few expensive possessions, but it was annoyingly normal to sit in the passenger seat while Wyatt drove. Things weren’t supposed to feel this easy. Where was the awkwardness that was always there at the beginning of a relationship? Where were the excuses I was so good at slinging? They were missing. Someone really had taken over my brain, and unfortunately it seemed to only be getting worse.

“We’re almost there.” Wyatt turned onto a two-lane road. We were the only car on the road, and it was eerily quiet compared to the interstate we’d recently been on. “I drove out here with Cade yesterday.”

After a mile and a half he slowed down, and turned onto a dirt road through the woods.

“Why do I get a bad feeling about where we’re headed?” I searched the woods on either side of us. I saw nothing, but that did nothing to assuage my fear.

“Your feeling is probably right.” Wyatt drove slowly. I was glad we were in my jeep and not a small sedan or anything.

“That’s not reassuring.” I’m not sure what I was expecting him to say, but agreeing with me wasn’t it.

“We’re good. This isn’t our first adventure.” He rested his hand right next to my leg on my seat.

“No. Not by a long shot.”

“Also, just so you know, we’re sharing a room tonight,” he said nonchalantly.

“Sharing a room where?” I was afraid to ask because of one answer he might give.

“Here. I assume we’re staying overnight.”

“Ok…” So we were spending the night in a Sorceress’s house in the middle of nowhere. Wonderful.

“That was a quick agreement.” He glanced over at me.

“I’d rather not get killed or possessed in my sleep. I don’t want to stay here, but if it’s unavoidable, I’d prefer not to do it alone.”

“Yeah me neither. I wanted to make sure you understood the whole we stick together thing applied 24/7.”

“It’s times like these I miss Owen.” Maybe it was odd to think of my brother as I drove in the middle of nowhere with my maybe-sort-of boyfriend, but I did.

“He’s a good brother.” Wyatt slowed as the dirt road became basically no road. We were pretty much driving between trees. Every so often a branch scraped against the side of the car.
